Rennesøy was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Mosterøy was separated from Rennesøy July 1, 1884 - it was, however, again merged with Rennesøy January 1, 1965 (but without Kvitsøy).

The name

Until 1918 the name was written "Rennesø".
